Epic AI MegaJam 2026 Invites Developers to Build Games With AI

Epic Games has announced the 2026 Epic AI MegaJam, a four-day game-development event that encourages teams to combine Unreal Engine or Unreal Editor for Fortnite with AI-assisted workflows. The event runs November 12–15, 2026, with cash prizes and development continuation grants available for standout projects.

Announced on October 22, the competition invites participants to explore how AI tools can support game production, from code generation and prototyping to artwork and asset creation. Developers can participate online or at selected community locations, with an in-person event in San Francisco.

Four Days to Build a Playable Game

Teams can include up to five people, while the event allows participants to use AI agents and tools of their choice. Projects must be playable games made with Unreal Engine or Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). The kickoff livestream and theme reveal are scheduled for November 11, ahead of development starting November 12.

Epic specifically encourages experimentation with ambitious mechanics and visual styles that might otherwise be difficult to prototype in such a short timeframe. That makes the event relevant not just to programmers, but also to 3D artists, technical artists, animators and designers who want to test AI-supported production pipelines.

Cash Prizes and Development Grants

The official event listing advertises $65,000 in cash prizes, alongside sponsor awards and development continuation grants. The main competition includes separate Unreal Engine and UEFN awards, student entries and additional modifier categories such as visuals, mobile games and narrative-driven experiences.

Qualified standout projects may also receive continuation grants of up to $50,000 per team. These grants are distinct from the standard competition prizes and are intended to help promising games continue development beyond the jam. Eligibility requirements and official rules apply.

What AI-Assisted Development Could Change

For small teams, the practical attraction of AI-assisted workflows is speed: developers can explore multiple ideas, generate early assets, iterate on gameplay code and spend more time evaluating the finished experience. But fast generation does not remove the need for design judgment, debugging, optimization, artistic direction and quality control.

Epic’s judging criteria include innovation, theme, fun, gameplay, visuals, level design and audio. Those criteria place emphasis on the finished game rather than simply the quantity of AI-generated material.

Dates and Participation

The AI MegaJam takes place November 12–15, 2026. The in-person San Francisco gathering is scheduled for November 14–15, while remote participation is available internationally. The official event page states that entrants must be at least 18 years old and hold an active Epic Games account, subject to further eligibility restrictions.

For Zgian readers working in real-time 3D and game development, the event provides a timely case study in how AI tools are being incorporated into mainstream production environments.
