China’s First AI Theatrical Film Sanxingdui: Future Past Sets October Release

China is preparing to bring what it describes as its first AI-produced theatrical feature to cinemas, marking another significant step in the development of AI-assisted filmmaking.

Sanxingdui: Future Past (三星堆:未来往事) is scheduled to open nationwide in China on October 23, 2026. The 100-minute science-fiction film combines the mysteries of the ancient Sanxingdui civilization with a futuristic world shaped by superintelligent AI.

A 100-Minute AI Film

The film is particularly notable because AI was incorporated throughout its production process rather than being used simply to create individual shots or promotional material.

According to reports, the project took approximately two years of technical development, generated more than 1.2 million source images, and went through more than 100 full-film iterations during production.

The film was produced by companies under Bona Film Group, with generation and production handled through Boka Film Cloud.

Unlike productions using digital replicas of actors, the film’s characters are entirely original digital creations. No digital copies of real performers were used.

AI Generates — Humans Direct

One of the more interesting aspects of the production is the division between AI generation and human creative control.

The production team says AI was responsible for generation and execution tasks, while the creative concept, narrative direction and artistic decisions remained with Bona’s AIGMS team of more than 100 people. The project followed a conventional film-production workflow while integrating AI into the production process.

That distinction is important.

Generating an impressive five-second AI video is very different from maintaining visual consistency across a 100-minute feature.

Characters need to remain recognizable. Costumes and environments must remain consistent. Lighting and visual language need to work from scene to scene. Facial expressions and movement also need to remain under control.

The production team reportedly manually calibrated details such as character micro-expressions frame by frame to reduce inconsistencies generated during the AI process. The intended theatrical specifications include 4K imagery, HDR colour and multichannel surround sound.

Ancient Civilization Meets Future AI

The story itself creates an unusual connection between ancient history and artificial intelligence.

The film revolves around mysterious symbols found on Sanxingdui bronze artifacts. In the movie’s science-fiction setting, the symbols contain a binary code that appears impossible for a civilization thousands of years old to have created.

Thousands of years later, superintelligent AI has spread around the world and humanity has become increasingly dependent on algorithms.

An archaeologist eventually discovers that seven ancient symbols may hold the key to resolving the crisis.

The film therefore uses AI in two ways: as a filmmaking technology and as one of the central subjects of its story.

Bringing Sanxingdui to the Big Screen

The filmmakers are also using the project to combine Chinese archaeological imagery with science-fiction filmmaking.

Iconic Sanxingdui artifacts—including the Bronze Sacred Tree, Bronze Standing Figure and distinctive bronze masks—are recreated in a highly realistic visual style.

The story moves between the ancient Shu civilization and futuristic environments, including imagined royal and ceremonial locations and a future cosmic setting.

The film previously appeared during the Cannes Film Festival period and also presented an international concept trailer at the Hong Kong International Film & TV Market.

The Bigger Challenge for AI Filmmaking

Sanxingdui: Future Past illustrates an important change in the AI-video industry.

The question is increasingly moving away from:

“Can AI generate a good-looking shot?”

and toward:

“Can AI become part of a repeatable feature-film production pipeline?”

A feature film requires far more than individual image generation. It requires asset management, character consistency, environment continuity, storyboarding, iteration, editing, sound, supervision and quality control.

The film’s reported 1.2 million-plus source images and more than 100 full-film iterations demonstrate how much experimentation can be required when AI is used at feature-film scale.

Its October theatrical release will provide an opportunity to see how this production model translates to a finished feature presented to cinema audiences.

For the AI filmmaking industry, that may ultimately be more significant than the fact that AI was used to make the movie.
