What does compositing mean?
Compositing means combining separate visual elements into one image. A shot may contain an actor, digital environment, CG creature, fog, sparks and a replacement sky. The compositor makes those pieces feel like one photograph.
A good composite is often invisible. Matching light, color, perspective, depth, motion, texture and focus is usually more important than simply adding more effects.
Why is compositing important in VFX?
Different VFX departments create different pieces. A 3D artist may deliver a creature render, a simulation artist may deliver smoke, and a roto artist may deliver a matte. The compositor brings those elements together with the live-action plate.

How does green-screen compositing work?
A keyer separates a controlled background color from the foreground subject and creates a matte. Professional shots often combine keying with roto and edge refinement for hair, motion blur, transparency and difficult areas.
How do artists make CGI look real?
