


Rigging turns a static 3D model into something an animator can control. A good rig provides a digital skeleton, intuitive controls and deformation systems that make believable movement possible.
What is 3D rigging?
3D rigging is the process of creating a digital control system that lets an artist manipulate a 3D model. In character animation, the rig usually sits between the model and the animator.
Without a rig, an animator would have to manipulate the model’s geometry directly for many movements. A rig provides a more practical interface: move a hand control, and the arm can respond through the underlying skeleton and deformation system.
A rig is an interface between the animator and the character. The best rigs hide technical complexity and give artists predictable, fast and expressive controls.
What is a digital skeleton?
A digital skeleton is a hierarchy of joints or bones that defines how the character can move. A typical humanoid hierarchy may include a root, spine, neck, head, arms, hands, legs and feet.
The skeleton itself does not need to look like real anatomy. It is a mathematical structure designed to produce useful movement in the character.
What are animation controls?
Animators usually do not manipulate every joint directly. Instead, riggers create visible controls that make common tasks easier.
Controls can include sliders, curves, custom shapes and other interfaces. Their purpose is to make animation faster and more intuitive.
What is skinning?
Skinning connects the character’s visible geometry to the underlying skeleton. When a joint moves, the skinning system determines which vertices move with it and by how much.
Weights control the influence of each joint. Good weighting allows elbows, knees, shoulders and other areas to deform naturally instead of collapsing or stretching incorrectly.
What are constraints and rig logic?
Constraints create relationships between parts of a rig. For example, a hand control might drive the position of the wrist, while another control determines how the elbow points.
Rig logic can automate repetitive relationships and provide animator-friendly behavior. Complex productions may build sophisticated systems for limbs, faces, props, creatures and mechanical objects.
How does a character-rigging workflow work?
Rigging begins with a production-ready model
Topology and proportions matter because the rig can only deform the geometry that it receives. Character models often need specific edge flow around joints and facial features.
Build the skeleton
The rigger establishes the hierarchy and joint positions. The structure should support the poses and movement required by the project.
Bind and weight the character
The mesh is connected to the skeleton and the influence of each joint is refined. This stage can require extensive testing and correction.
Build animator controls
Controls are designed around how animators actually work. The goal is to expose useful creative decisions without forcing the animator to understand every technical connection.
How does facial rigging work?
Facial rigs can use joints, blend shapes, corrective shapes or combinations of techniques. They may provide controls for brows, eyelids, cheeks, lips, jaw and other areas.
High-end characters often use corrective systems to preserve believable forms when the face moves into extreme expressions.
What makes a good rig?
- Predictable: Controls behave the way animators expect.
- Flexible: The rig supports the required range of motion.
- Stable: It avoids unnecessary technical failures or flipping.
- Fast: Animators can work without excessive scene overhead.
- Deformation-friendly: The model bends and compresses convincingly.
- Production-ready: It works with the project’s animation and rendering pipeline.
A beautiful rig that is difficult to animate is not a successful rig. Rigging should be judged by the quality of the animator’s experience and the final deformation.
What happens after rigging?
Once the rig passes testing, animators can create poses and movement. The asset may then go through animation, lighting, rendering and compositing.
